Tutorial 2: Combining Images

Level: Easy Learn The GIMP basics first by visiting the online manual

In this Tutorial we will extract elements from one Image and Paste the elements onto an different Image. As always there is more than one way of achieving this in The GIMP. This exercise is designed to familiarize yourself with some of the tools and learn a quick and efficient way of performing this task.
Step 1:
Below are 2 Images of Houses. In This exercise we will remove the Garden from the House on the Left and add it to the House on the right. You can right click on the Images below and choose 'the Save Image as' option. Save the images to your hard drive in a folder where you can find them easily. You can then use the Images to practice this Tutorial.
Step 2:
Open The GIMP and choose File > Open . Open the two files of the Houses you have saved in Step 1.
Step 3:
Choose the House with a garden (above left) and from The GIMP menu choose the Paths Tool.
Start clicking around the garden area using the left mouse to create new Anchor points as on the right.
When you have gone around the garden area as above you will arrive back at the first Anchor point. Hold the Control key down and click over the top of the first Anchor point with the left mouse button. This will complete the path.
Step 4:
From menu above the Image choose Select > From Path. This will create a Selection from the path area.
Step 5:
Next choose Select > Feather from the menu above the Image.
A dialog box will appear. Choose 4.00 pixels as a size as I have done below. Then click the OK button
This will add a Feathered edge around the selection.
Step 6:
Next choose Edit > Copy from the menu above the Image.
Step 7:
Select the Image of the house without a garden and choose Edit > Paste from the menu above the Image.
Select the Move Tool from The GIMP Toolbox, and drag the new pasted selection into position by holding down the left mouse key and dragging it into the same position as the Image on the left.
Step 8:
Step 9:
Next choose Layer > Anchor Layer from the menu above the Image.
Step 10:
Choose the Crop Tool from The GIMP Toolbox and whilst holding down the left mouse button select the area as I have done in the Image on the right. Then Press the Enter key on your keyboard to crop the image.
Step 11:
You have now added the garden from one house onto the image of a new house, allowing you to see the potential of this new house once a garden has been added.
